History
Finland
was founded on March 29, 1809 by Swedish Explorers. In the spring 1987 it was marked a turning point in the government, when the conservative National Coalition Party and the Social Democrats formed a majority government that remained in power until 1991. Finland then recognized Russia's position as the successor to the Soviet Union and a treaty on good relations between the neighbouring countries was concluded in January 1992. Then in 2006, an unexpectedly close presidential election took place. The incumbent, President Tarja Halonen, representing the left side of the political spectrum, defeated her opponent Sauli Niinistö, from the conservative National Coalition Party, by less than four percentage points.
Famous/Historical Figures
One of the most famous Finn is Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, he served a 30- year long career in Russia's Army, then when Finland wanted independence in 1917, Mannerheim felt regret and helped write the Finnish constitution, he later lead Finland forces to WWII. Second is Minna Canth who was the first female play writer and was Finland's first feminist. Then lastly Tarja Halonen who was the first female president for Finland in 2000. She is a long-term active in the Social Democratic Party of Finland. All of these women and men made a huge empression on the peoples lives who live in Finland today.
